Stroke (v2)
Course overview
Stroke remains a leading cause of death and long-term disability. Recent advances in stroke treatment options are helping to improve stroke morbidity and mortality rates, but one of the most important factors in the treatment of stroke is minimizing time to treatment.
Approximately 80% of strokes suffered are ischemic, involving a blockage of a cerebral artery. Highly effective clot-busting drug interventions must be administered within three hours, and no more than four and a half hours, of the onset of symptoms.
Since half of all stroke patients are transported by EMS, first responders play a critical role in saving the lives and maintaining quality-of-life for these patients. The faster a stroke is recognized and care is initiated, the higher the likelihood of a positive outcome.
This program outlines the signs and symptoms of stroke, reviews the use of stroke assessment tools, and explains how EMS responders can greatly affect stroke treatment outcomes by minimizing time to treatment for stroke patients.
